Firefighters/EMT
Qualifications
Interested in becoming a volunteer Firefighter
or Emergency Medical Technician?
The entry qualifications into either program are to be 18 years
of age, have a High School diploma (or GED), have a driver's license
and a good driving record, have taken CPR, and have good attendance
and work ethics.
Firefighters and EMT’s are required to work one 12-hour shift every
week. Training is provided on a weekly basis of 2-6 hours every
week depending on the curriculum, working toward certification
in the field of choice. All training and uniforms are provided
free of charge by the Department, in exchange for your service.
Overnight accommodations are provided.
If you are interested in either of these programs, simply visit
the main station at 515 Graves Avenue and fill out an application.
Once your application is submitted, someone on the membership committee
will contact you. This person will meet with you to explain the
program, and answer any questions you may have. Your background
will be verified by the police department and through the character
references you provided on your application.
The training required to begin running on the ambulance is a department
provided orientation class. During your first year you will attend
classes to become a Kentucky certified Emergency Medical Technician.
The culmination of this class is the National Registry EMT test.
The EMT training is a combination of about 170 hours of classroom
and in the field training. In the end you will be a Nationally
Registered Emergency Medical Technician.
The training required to begin running on the fire truck is participation
in the Firefighter Essentials class. This class is the basic building
block for all future training. After completion of the Firefighter
Essentials class you will continue your training to become a fully
certified Kentucky Volunteer Firefighter. The training requirement
to become a Kentucky Volunteer Firefighter is a combination of
about 150 hours of classroom and in the field training. |
